WHITE HOUSE VIDEO MESSAGE: Prioritizing the Middle Class

WASHINGTON, DC In this weeks message, Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council Cecilia Muoz discussed President Obamas trip to Minnesota, where he spent time with people who shared their concerns, successes, and hopes. The President will keep fighting his economic priorities in the weeks and months ahead, because he knows the best way to expand opportunity for all hardworking Americans and continue to strengthen the economy is to grow it from the middle-out.

The White House

June 28, 2014

Hi, everybody. Im Cecilia Muoz, Director of the White House Domestic Policy Council. This week, the President Obama spent a couple days in Minneapolis, talking with people about their lives their concerns, their successes, and their hopes for the future.

He went because of a letter he received from a working mother named Rebekah, who shared with him the hardships her young family has faced since the financial crisis.

Today, over the past 51 months, our businesses have created 9.4 million new jobs. By measure after measure, our economy is doing better than it was five years ago.

But as she said in her letter, there are still too many middle-class families like Rebekahs who do everything right who work hard and who sacrifice, who retrain but cant seem to get ahead. With just the right change in our priorities, we could fix that.

While the obstruction in Congress to advance ideas to strengthen the middle class ensues, the President will keep taking actions on his own like the actions he has taken already to attract new jobs, lift workers wages, and help students pay off their loans. Well do it together.

Rather than more tax breaks for millionaires, lets give more tax breaks to help working families pay for child care or college. Lets put people to work rebuilding roads and bridges right here in America.

We do better when the middle class does better. Thats what the President and I believe in. Thats what the President will keep fighting for.

Have a great Fourth of July, everybody and good luck to Team USA down in Brazil.
