Airways Aviation graduate secures full time Helicopter Pilot job
AIRWAYS Aviation’s ability to provide real employment pathways has been bolstered following the successful transition of one of its graduates into the workforce
Michael Jones has secured a job at Airways Aviation’s Tangalooma operation just months after gaining his Commercial Pilot Licence (Helicopter).
The Tugun resident credited the opportunity to gain work experience at the Tangalooma base as the reason for his ability to harness the position.
“The experience working in the industry without a doubt led me to getting a job,” Mr Jones said.
“Without doing the volunteering it wouldn’t have led to the work being available but by lending a hand I was able to get full time work.”
Mr Jones said Airways Aviation played a pivotal role in the future of students who thrive because of the unique service and focus on developing each student from when they begin their courses to when they enter the industry.
“Airways Aviation has to be at the top for students who get to move on to a job like I’ve got,” he said.
“Not a lot of schools offer that transition or can provide that pathway into the real world.”
The 24-year-old began studying in April last year and completed his ground school at Caloundra and his flight school on the Gold Coast before securing his licence in November.
Mr Jones, who worked in retail while studying, had little experience with the aviation industry before deciding to try his hand at flying.
“Previous to last year I didn’t really have any sort of ties to aviation,” Mr Jones said.
“Coming out of school I took a scenic flight from Hayman Island over to Hamilton Island and thought it was pretty cool but I never really pursued it.
“My friends were all going off to university and I didn’t really want to sit behind a desk and do that kind of job. I just wanted to do something hands on.
“It is that hands on experience that I love about it. Being in control of something like that is really enjoyable.”
Mr Jones said it was an easy decision to fly helicopters instead of fixed wing.
“The helicopters just appealed to me a bit more,” Mr Jones said.
“It is a bit more hands on because you have to always be on the controls and I love the concept that you can land wherever you want without needing a big run way.”
