EPA Proposes Carbon Pollution Reduction Plan

Date: 6/13/2014

On June 2, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a Clean Power Plan proposal, which for the first time reduces carbon pollution from existing power plants, the single largest source of carbon pollution in the United States. The proposal is designed to protect public health, move the United States toward a cleaner environment, and fight climate change while supplying Americans with reliable and affordable power. The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) recently published The Clean Air Benefits of Wind Energy, a report that quantifies the emissions reductions that can be attributed to the wind turbines currently installed in the United States. The authors utilize the EPA's AVERT modeling tool; according to the report, the 167.7 million megawatt-hours of wind energy produced in the United States in 2013 reduced CO2 emissions by 126.8 million tons (the equivalent of reducing power sector emissions by more than 5%) and the technology is poised to play a greater role.
