Join WINDExchange for a recap of presentations from the recent American Wind Energy Association WINDPOWER Conference in Las Vegas:
- Land-Based Wind Turbine Transportation and Logistics Barriers and Their Effects on U.S. Wind Markets. U.S. wind projects face transportation and logistics barriers that limit the size of utility-scale, land-based wind turbines that can be deployed. This presentation summarizes a recent NREL study that identifies the barriers, assesses their impact, and provides recommendations for strategies and actions. (Jason Cotrell, NREL)
- The Eastern Renewable Generation Integration Study. This presentation summarizes NREL's analysis of the operational impacts of high wind and solar penetrations on the Eastern Interconnection. The Eastern Renewable Generation Integration Study builds on the transmission expansions envisioned in the Eastern Interconnection Planning Collaborative to understand the interactions of load, wind, and solar on unit commitment and system dispatch. The goal of the study is to develop a robust sub-hourly production cost model of the Eastern Interconnection and analyze regional and national strategies for reaching 30% renewable penetration by the year 2025. (Aaron Bloom, NREL)
- Improved Wind Plant Design through Joint Optimization of Turbine Selection and Layout. This study utilizes the new Wind Plant Integrated Systems Design and Engineering Model (WISDEM) to examine integrated turbine and plant design. Such analysis can be useful to understand the ideal minimum for levelized cost of energy for a wind plant or to serve as an aid in plant design when multiple turbine types are under consideration. The results show that ideal wind plant levelized cost of energy can be improved through integration of turbine and plant design. (Katherine Dykes, NREL)
