Michigan corn producers have voted down a proposed assessment increase under the Agriculture Commodities Marketing Act, Michigan Department of Agriculture Jamie Clover Adams announced today.

Michigan corn producers turned down the proposed assessment increase to the Corn Marketing Program of Michigan in a referendum held last month.  2,215 ballots were received.  Of the 2,215 ballots received, 201 were disqualified.  Of the valid 2,014 referendum ballots to determine whether to increase the assessment of Michigan corn by $0.01 per bushel, 821 producers voted yes (41 percent) representing 39,924,497.957  bushels of corn (39 percent) and 1,193 producers voted no (59  percent) representing 63,606,029.912 bushels of corn (61 percent).

The assessment remains at $0.01 per bushel of Michigan corn as provided in the program last supported by growers in the 2013 referendum.

For the amendment to pass, more than 50 percent of the producer votes cast, representing more than 50 percent of the total number of bushels represented on the cast ballots, must approve it.
