UAW mourns General Baker

DETROIT – The UAW issued the following statement on behalf of the members and retirees of the UAW on the passing of UAW activist General Baker:

“General was a strong activist and voice for human rights and economic justice in both the workplace and community.  We will all miss him,” said UAW President Bob King.

“It is with deep regret and sadness that we mourn the passing of labor leader, educator, and historian, General Baker. General’s commitment and efforts in the labor movement, spanning a half century, are too numerous to list, but we are grateful for his leadership and commitment to improving the lives of working people,” said UAW Vice President Jimmy Settles.

“I considered General Baker a mentor and a friend not just to me personally, but to everyone in the fight for what is fair and just,” said UAW Region 1A Director Rory Gamble. “He was a reminder of those early days in this union and some of the tough battles we fought. He leaves a rich and remarkable legacy.”

The UAW extends deepest sympathy to the family of General Baker.
