MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, UNITED KINGDOM, May 6, 2014 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic will play his final home game for the club at Old Trafford on 6th May when United entertain Hull City.

Vidic has been at the club for eight and a half years, after signing from Spartak Moscow for £7m on Christmas Day 2005. During that time he has won the Premier League title 5 times, and lifted the Champions League in 2008.

Vidic readily admits that the 2008 win ranks as the highlight of his career, as United beat Chelsea on penalties to claim their third European crown.

Fans will remember Vidic as a tough tackling defender who always gave 100% to the cause. Although not blessed with great pace, his determination and influence made him a key part of United's success, forming a formidable partnership with Rio Ferdinand at the heart of United's defence.

United blogger Jay Pritchard summed up the fans' feelings towards Vidic when he said: "Nemanja will be hard to replace, and we certainly won’t do it for anything like the £7 million we paid for him back in 2005. It’s been an absolute pleasure to have him at Old Trafford and we wish him well."

As Pritchard says, the club will now be faced with the task of replacing their captain during the summer transfer window, ahead of what will be a crucial season next year. Whoever the next manager may be, he won't find this easy. But for now, fans will be keen to say their farewells and thanks to a player who commands the respect and admiration of all at the club.
