Physician Employment Issue: Working Part-Time

// Dallas, Texas, United States // Attorney Keith Clouse (Press Release) // Keith Clouse

As work-life balance concerns grow in importance, more physicians are moving to part-time schedules. Both physicians and physician practices report benefits. Working part-time appeals to many doctors, especially those who are approaching retirement, raising young children, or interested in pursuing other interests without sacrificing their medical careers. Practice groups report that part-time physicians ease the burden on full-time doctors by providing coverage on busy days, holidays, and during vacation seasons.

But, before a doctor moves to a part-time schedule, he must address several issues. First, he must address his compensation package. He may be paid an hourly rate, a percentage of a full-time salaried position, a per diem fee, or pursuant to another arrangement, such as a profitability-based system. He needs to negotiate a physician non-compete agreement that will protect his interests should he leave the practice. He must also address how he will handle making rounds and what his call burden will be. Finally, he must address benefit-related issues, such as health insurance and reimbursements for seminars.
