Wind Energy Helped CAISO Avoid Emergency Alert

Date: 4/7/2014

SNL reported that wind energy helped save the day for the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), which oversees the operation of California's bulk electric power system. On February 6, just as CAISO was preparing to issue an emergency conservation alert due to natural gas price spikes and supply curtailments, 800 MW of additional wind generation began ramping up, preventing the need to issue the alert. Grid Operator President and CEO Steve Berberich noted that these events highlight "the continued need for electric and gas coordination."
