American Lung Association Welcomes New Methane Plan

Statement of the American Lung Association

Washington, D.C. (March 28, 2014)

We commend the Obama Administration for developing a strategy to curb methane air pollution, particularly from the oil and gas sector.  Methane is a potent climate forcing pollutant.  Scientists warn that methane contributes to climate change and warmer average temperatures. Rising temperatures increase the risk of unhealthful ozone levels, because higher temperatures can enhance the conditions for ozone formation.

The Interagency Methane Strategy announced today will coordinate the federal government’s response to methane.   We are particularly interested in efforts by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to regulate emissions of methane and other toxic air pollutants from the oil and gas industry.  Stopping methane leaks will help reduce leaks of all volatile organic compounds that form ozone smog and include carcinogens such as benzene.  Eliminating leaks will also help reduce the risk of natural gas explosions. While voluntary programs can help, we will work to ensure that the Administration incorporates additional requirements to protect public health.

The American Lung Association looks forward to working with the Administration to implement this important strategy.
