His Majesty King Mohammed VI and Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba, chaired, Thursday at the Presidential Palace in Libreville, the signing ceremony of the strategic partnership between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Gabonese Republic in the field of fertilizer.

This project is part of a shared desire of both Heads of State to ensure that the people of Africa must be the first to benefit from their natural resources.

In his speech at opening ceremony of moroccan-ivorian economic forum (February 25, 2014), King Mohammed vi emphasized this common vision by saying ” As for credibility, it requires that the continent’s wealth should benefit African peoples in the first place. This means South/South cooperation should be at the heart of inter-African economic partnerships”

This strategic partnership aims to increase food security on the continent, and is part of South-South cooperation. On a continent where nearly 80 per cent of arable land is not exploited, this unprecedented project aims to produce phosphate and ammonia fertilizer that is adapted to the specificities of the different ecosystems that make up African soil, and enhance agricultural potential for sustainable human development.

Total production capacity will be around 2 million tons of fertilizer per year by 2018, which will be directed primarily towards African countries. The potential for exploitation could reach 8 million tons per year, due to the strong demand for adequate and accessible fertilizer.

”The Moroccan-Gabonese strategic partnership in the fertilizer field, signed Thursday in Libreville, will develop a processing industry that will support agricultural activity in the two countries, but also in several African countries” , said Gabonese Minister of oil and hydrocarbons Etienne Dieudonné Ngoubou at the end of the signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Understanding related to this strategic partnership.

This agreement is an opportunity of an south-south win-win agreement that can benefit all Africa , he concluded.

Sharing the same view, Moroccan Foreign Minister Salaheddine Mezouar declared that the complementarily between Morocco and Gabon in terms of natural resources offers great opportunities to African farmers and the agricultural sector in Africa in general, likely to enable ensure food self-sufficiency. He also highlighted the particular importance of the royal visit to Gabon, fourth and last leg of a tour that took the Sovereign to other African countries, noting that the agreements that will be signed will benefit not only the two countries but all countries in the African continent.
