  • Continental Tire has designated tires black or gold for the 2014 IMSA season in the Tudor United SportsCar Championship.

  • No planned changes to the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge tires in 2014.

Ft. Mill, S.C. – January 21, 2014.   Just as the landscape of American sports car racing is changing, so is the look of Continental tires.  For the 2014 International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) season, Continental Tire will designate “black” or “gold” tires for teams in the Tudor United SportsCar Championship.  Teams racing in the Prototype (P), Prototype Challenge (PC) and GT Daytona (GTD) classes will race on “black” or “gold” tires dependent upon whether the track is considered a stadium or natural road course.

“We wanted tire designations that were easy to identify for the fans and media,” said Travis Roffler, director of marketing for Continental Tire.  “By changing the design of the sidewall, it will be easier for people to identify which tire configuration each class is running at a particular track.  Over the last several years we’ve only used gold letters on the sidewall.  This year, in addition to the gold Continental logo, we will have ‘black’ tires that are black letters in a gold box on the sidewall.” The tire configuration differs slightly between a stadium and natural road course mainly due to the banked ovals of a stadium road course, which cause additional wear on the tires.  The designations for Continental dry tires in 2014 are as follows:

Prototypes Golds – Daytona, Indy Blacks – Sebring, Long Beach, Laguna Seca, Detroit, Watkins Glen, Mosport, Road America, COTA, Road Atlanta

Prototype Challenge Golds – Daytona, Kansas, Indy Blacks – Sebring, Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen, Road America, VIR, COTA, Road Atlanta

GT Daytona Golds – Daytona, Indy Blacks – Sebring, Laguna Seca, Detroit, Watkins Glen, Mosport, Road America, VIR, COTA, Road Atlanta

With regards to wet tires, P and PC teams will use tires designated, “black”, in the wet and GTD teams will use tires designated, “gold”, in the wet.  The Delta Wing will race on, “blacks”, year round in wet and dry since it’s the only car running on that tire configuration.

There are no planned changes to the tires for the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge for 2014.  Both the Street Tuner (ST) and Grand Sport (GS) cars will run the same tire at all 12 races this year.

Continental Tire will be at every Tudor United SportsCar Championship and Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge race this year with a team of engineers and support staff to accommodate the more than 25,000 tires expected to be processed over the course of the 2014 IMSA season.
