Closing of the 20th Session of the Al-Quds (Jerusalem) Committee

His Majesty King Mohammed VI, accompanied by HRH Prince Moulay Rachid, chaired, Saturday afternoon at the Royal Palace of Marrakech, the closing session of the 20th meeting of Al-Quds Committee in the presence of President of the State of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas.

At this occasion, HM the King gave a speech in which he committed to pursue all his efforts to support the steadfast struggle of the Palestinian people and to push forward the peace process, whose key element is a fair settlement of the issue of Al Quds al-Sharif.

The Monarch also stressed his deep commitment to the identity of Al-Quds. ”In fact, we want Al-Quds to remain what it has always been: a rallying symbol of the monotheistic religions and a haven of coexistence between its inhabitants, in an environment of peace and harmony” said the King.

For his part, President Mahmoud Abbas expressed his high regard to His Majesty King Mohammed VI for his continuous support to the Palestinian cause and the tireless efforts of the Sovereign in favor of Al-Quds.

The U.S. government also hailed the commitment of HM King Mohammed VI to the protection of the religious and civilizational heritage of the holy city of Al-Quds. “We appreciate the commitment of His Majesty the King to preserving the religious and cultural heritage of the city of Al-Quds,” said Rashad Hussain, Special Envoy of the United States to the organization of Islamic Cooperation, in a speech at an interactive session between the Committee members and the international guests invited.

The United States attaches great importance to the future of the holy city, added the US diplomat , recalling the commitment of President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry to a final settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on the basis of principle of two states living together in peace and security.

During the same session , the Special Envoy of the United Kingdom for the peace process in the Middle East, Sir Vincent Fean, welcomed the model of tolerance that has always prevailed in Morocco between the three monotheistic religions. “Morocco, under the leadership of HM King Mohammed VI, enjoys a climate of tolerance and coexistence that has always prevailed in Morocco between the three monotheistic religions,” said the British diplomat.

The Organization of the United Nations also paid a tribute to HM King Mohammed VI for his commitment to the holy city. “I welcome the commitment of His Majesty King Mohammed VI to the holy city,” said Robert Serry, Special Coordinator for the UN peace process in the Middle East .

The closing session was also marked by the reading of the Final declaration, issued by morocco’s Foreign Minister, Salaheddine Mezouar.

In a statement to the press, The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Mr. Iyad Madani, welcomed all the recommendations issued which according to him, illustrate a common desire to urge the international community to act to end Israeli attempts to change the legal status of the holy city.”
