New Data Show Score Is FHWA’s Highest-Ever Ranking

WASHINGTON – The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration today was named the fifth best place to work in the federal government by the Partnership for Public Service. The annual ranking compares more than 300 federal agencies and subcomponents.

“When I joined the Department of Transportation, I repeatedly heard that our staff was among the best in the federal government, and I’m proud to see today’s results reflect that,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx. “The nearly 3,000 employees of the Federal Highway Administration deserve special praise – as a result of their dedication and professionalism, they are both keeping America’s roads and bridges safe for millions of their fellow Americans and making FHWA a truly special place to work.”

Though it is the third consecutive year the agency has been listed in the top 20, it is the first time FHWA has been ranked in the top five.

“Our employees know that our work makes a real difference in people’s lives,” said Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez. “It’s part of what makes working at FHWA so worthwhile. When it comes to keeping America’s highways and bridges safe, our employees make every day count – which makes the agency a great place to work.”

Published in the Partnership for Public Service’s 2013 Best Places to Work Index, the rankings are based on the Office of Personnel Management’s Best Places to Work in the Federal Government Survey, which analyzes data collected from nearly 700,000 federal workers to produce a detailed view of employee satisfaction and commitment. The Department of Transportation survey was conducted April 28 – June 7, 2013.

Agency subcomponents are not only measured on overall employee satisfaction, but they are scored in 10 workplace categories, such as effective leadership, employee skills/mission match, pay, teamwork and work/life balance. The FHWA is ranked in the top ten percent of every category.
