PJM, the independent grid operator for all or portions of 13 states and the District of Columbia, published research that demonstrates that up to 30% of the electricity produced in the Mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes states could come from wind energy and solar power and offer benefits that exceed the cost of integrating the renewables into the grid. Additional transmission lines and reserve power resources would be needed for this scenario, but the researchers conclude that savings resulting from electricity costs and reduced emissions would be greater than the integration costs.
