Microsoft has entered into its first ever power purchase agreement, resulting in the company obtaining 430,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of renewable electricity. The company is purchasing the entire output of RES Americas' new 110 megawatt (MW) Texas wind farm which is expected to come online by June 2015. The project is being partially funded by Microsoft's internal carbon fee which charges departments for carbon emissions. Microsoft established the carbon fee program in May of 2012 as part of the company's efforts to become carbon neutral. The fees are based on current market pricing for renewable energy and carbon offsets; thus far the program has gathered an estimated $10 million in funds.
