Today, as part of the 'See Inside Manufacturing' (SIM) initiative, Business Secretary of State Vince Cable MP will hear all about what the food and drink industry is doing for this year's SIM and more widely about careers in the food and drink industry.

Speaking at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) HQ, Secretary of State Vince Cable will visit the Food and Drink Federation's (FDF) exhibition space to learn more about the importance of skills to food and drink manufacturing and how it plays a vital role in underpinning economic growth.

See Inside Manufacturing is an exciting initiative run by BIS in conjunction with UK manufacturing industries, which aims to improve the image of manufacturing and inspire young people to consider a rewarding career in sectors such as food and drink.

During October, members across the country are taking part in SIM with over 1,600 visits planned. Members are coordinating a variety of diverse and interactive visits like CV writing and skills workshops to work experience within factory sites and a “bean to bar” challenge to understand more about the food industry.

Companies taking part include: Border Biscuits, British Sugar, Coca-Cola Enterprises, KP Snacks, Mars, Mondelez International, Nestlè, PepsiCo, Thorntons plc and Wrigley's.

This exhibition follows on from the week long activity at Defra Showcase to explain the major contribution food and drink manufacturing makes to the UK economy through a series of events taking place at Defra HQ every day this week.

Angela Coleshill, Director of Employment and Skills at Food and Drink Federation said:

“We are delighted that the BIS Secretary of State Vince Cable will visit our stand today and understand more about our member activities across the country.”

“As an industry, we recognise that to deliver our shared vision for growth of 20% by 2020, we will need to build a strong pipeline of talent. Engaging with young people and bringing to life a career in food and drink is a key priority for FDF and is the main driver behind our Taste Success careers campaign and our recently launched MEng Food Engineering Degree.

Programmes such as SIM support this work by busting the myths often associated with manufacturing and provide a better understanding of the variety of jobs available, highlighting that food and drink manufacturing really is a great career choice.”
