Mistreating an Employee Based on the Employee’s Age

A manager may subtly stereotype and mistreat an employee because the employee is “young” and the manager is biased against the employee’s generation. Even if this treatment doesn’t meet the standard for age discrimination, an employer should stop this behavior immediately.
The newest arrivals to the workplace are “millennials.” Millennials allegedly don’t take criticism well, feel entitled to good things, and are lazy. A manager who believes in that stereotype may ascribe those characteristics to a young employee, even if the employee does not actually demonstrate those characteristics. For example, the manager may avoid addressing work-related concerns with the employee because the manager believes the employee would overreact and get upset. This could hinder the employee’s performance and growth.
Gen X’ers are older than millennials. Stereotypical negative traits associated with Gen X’ers are cynicism, selfishness, and a strong focus on work-life balance. A manager’s bias may emerge when handling common workplace issues. For example, a manager who allows an older employee to take time off to move an elderly parent to a retirement community may balk when asked by a Gen X’er for permission to take a child to a soccer tournament.
