New Community Solar Program Introduced at Seattle Aquarium
The Seattle Aquarium is partnering with Seattle City Light to install a 49 kilowatt (kW) solar array as part of the utility's Community Solar and Green Up programs. Under the Community Solar program, customers can purchase up to 125 solar panels in the aquarium's array at a cost of $150 for each 24-watt unit. Those customers will then receive a credit from the utility and a production incentive from the state, for a total of $1.15 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of generated electricity. Through the Green Up program, Seattle City Light can then sell the power generated by the solar array to customers wishing to support renewable energy. Those customers pay a slightly higher price for their electricity to cover the additional cost of integrating renewable energy into Seattle City Light's power source.
