Florida Nursing Home Faces Fine, Probation Over Abuse Allegations
A Florida nursing home faces probation and a fine for neglecting to report abuse allegations.
TAMPA, FL, US, August 7, 2013 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Silvercrest Manor Nursing Home in Crestview also is accused of failing to implement policies for the prevention of abuse, according to the Agency for Health Care Administration. According to a proposal for settlement, multiple members of the home's staff were made aware of rough physical treatment and refusal of services or care toward three residents.“The sheer size of Florida's nursing home population means that cases of abuse and neglect are unfortunately all too common,” said Tampa nursing home abuse attorney Robert Joyce of the Joyce & Reyes Law Firm. “Our vulnerable seniors deserve excellent treatment and care, and it is good to see state authorities holding nursing homes accountable.”
The proposed fine is $13,500. The home will also be placed on a state “watch list.” Facilities on the list are subject to inspections every six months. One in five Florida nursing homes is on the state's watch list. Silvercrest Manor has 30 days to appeal the ruling. A spokesman for the home issued a statement refuting the state's allegations and denying any wrongdoing. No members of the staff have been disciplined as a result of the report.
In late 2012, state inspectors cited the home for one Class 1 violation and one Class 2 violation. Class 1 violations, the more serious of the two, are usually cause for an immediate fine or other consequence.
“No nursing home is immune to the occasional allegation of mistreatment,” added Joyce. “But it is the responsibility of every staff member at every facility to quickly respond to such allegations and take action to rectify the situation. Hopefully this state action will prompt this facility to implement better procedures to deal with any future problems.”
