EEE to host a conference on Norbert Wiener in the 21st Century, June 2014
Reintroducing Norbert Wiener, founder of cybernetics (the “cyber” in cyberspace)
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, UNITED STATES, July 15, 2013 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Norbert Wiener isn’t a household name, yet. Wiener invented cybernetics, the “cyber” in cyberspace, cyberwarfare and cyborgs. In June 2014 the 430,000-member Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) will hold a conference in Boston introducing Norbert Wiener to a new generation of technologists and the public. Since Wiener’s death in 1964 the technologies he helped invent have changed the world. His predictions of the impact that these technologies have become headline news: robots and jobs; cyberwarfare; advanced life-sciences; the unpredictability of the world we live in. Born in 1894, Norbert Wiener was a child prodigy, a philosopher, mathematician, scientist and engineer, who studied under Bertrand Russell, achieved fundamental breakthroughs in mathematics and science, invented the basis of factory automation, and co-founded information ethics. Beyond the impact that he made during his lifetime, many of his theories were decades ahead of their time. Only in the past decade have computers become sufficiently powerful to use many of his mathematical insights.1. This conference will look at Norbert Wiener's areas of research, and see where these have reached half a century after his death.
2. Following Wiener’s example, the conference will consider the social impact and ethical challenges posed by technologies today.
3. Attendees will also hear first-hand reminiscences from people who knew and worked with Wiener.
