Woodbury University President Luis Calingo Named Examiner for 2013 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award

Reappointment Marks Academic Leader’s 17th Year on Prestigious Panel

LOS ANGELES, July 1, 2013 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Affirming a nearly 20-year professional commitment to the cause of corporate excellence, Woodbury University president Luis Ma. R. Calingo has been appointed to the 2013 Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

The Award, created in 1987, is the highest level of national recognition for performance excellence that a U.S. organization can receive. The university made the announcement in association with Dr. Patrick D. Gallagher, Director of the Commerce Department’s National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which manages the program.

Initially selected from an applicant pool of more than a thousand, Calingo has served as a member of the Board of Examiners since 1997. Prior to working with the Baldrige Award domestically, Calingo helped shape the Baldrige framework in many Asian countries, including the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

As an Examiner, Calingo is responsible for reviewing and evaluating applications submitted for the Award and contributes a minimum of 110 hours of volunteer time (usually nights and weekends) each year The board is composed of an estimated 500 leading experts selected from industry, professional and trade organizations, education and health care organizations, and nonprofits, including government.

“The Baldrige Award is yardstick of, and a catalyst for, corporate performance at the highest level,” Calingo said. “The Award program is committed to these same principles and high standards. I’ve dedicated a good portion of my professional life to the Baldrige process, because I believe it’s vital to individuals, organizations, and the economies in which they thrive.”

Calingo, Woodbury’s 13th president, joined the school from Dominican University of California, where he was executive vice president and chief academic officer (and, earlier, dean of the School of Business and Leadership). He is past chair of the California State University Association of Business Deans, which coordinates the academic leadership initiatives of the 23 business schools in the CSU system. Calingo holds a Ph.D. and an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh, a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from the University of the Philippines, and a B.S. in industrial engineering from the University of the Philippines. His professional interests encompass servant leadership, strategic planning, total quality management, and international business, with a special focus on Southeast Asia.

To be selected to the board, a candidate must meet the highest standards of qualification and peer recognition. All members of the board must take part in a preparation course based on the Baldrige Criteria for Performance Excellence and the scoring and evaluation processes for the Baldrige Award.

The Baldrige Award may be given annually in each of six categories: manufacturing, service, small business, education, health care, and nonprofit. Awards have been presented to 93 organizations since the program’s inception. The Award Program is managed by NIST in close cooperation with the private sector.
