Piper 25 Delegates Hear Safety Lessons from Around the World

Over 700 delegates at the third day (20 June) of Oil & Gas UK’s Piper 25 conference will learn about the progress made in safety in offshore oil and gas provinces around the world.

The conference, principally sponsored by Talisman Sinopec Energy UK Limited, is a three-day event at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre to bring together people from across the global oil and gas industry to reflect on the lessons learnt from the tragedy, review how far offshore safety has evolved since and to reinforce industry commitment to continuous improvement.

 

The day will begin with experiences from the Australian oil and gas industry. Jane Cutler of the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority will first provide the regulator’s perspective on offshore safety in Australia following Piper Alpha and  Miranda Taylor of the Australian Petroleum Production and Exploration Association will explore the role of safety leadership in that province.

 

Thad Allen of Booz Allen Hamilton will then examine the changing dynamics in offshore safety between Piper Alpha and Deepwater Horizon, having acted as National Incident Commander during the response to the latter. He will focus in particular on the roles of advancing technology, decreasing margins for error and evolving regulatory regimes.

 

In the afternoon, the head of strategic interventions at the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), Steve Walker, will consider whether the recommendations of the Cullen Review which followed Piper Alpha are still relevant today and feedback from the workforce involvement day jointly run by Step Change in Safety and HSE will be explained to delegates.
