Piper 25 Delegates Hear Safety Lessons from Other Sectors
Speakers at the second day (19 June) of Oil & Gas UK’s Piper 25 conference shared with the 700 delegates lessons learned from major accidents in a range of other industrial sectors. The conference, principally sponsored by Talisman Sinopec Energy UK Limited, is a three-day event at Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre to bring together people from across the global oil and gas industry to reflect on the lessons learnt from the tragedy, review how far offshore safety has evolved since and to reinforce industry commitment to continuous improvement.
The day began with the airing of a short video designed to remind people of the underlying reasons why Piper Alpha happened and to challenge them to think about how these might apply to their own work. Offshore workers across the UK continental shelf and the 500 people attending Step Change in Safety’s Workforce Engagement Day simultaneously viewed the film.
The Hon. Mr Justice Haddon-Cave QC, chair for the review of the wider issues surrounding the loss of the Nimrod aircraft in Afghanistan in 2006, shared his views with the audience in a presentation entitled ‘Leadership and culture, principles and professionalism, simplicity and safety’. John Bresland, past chairman of the US Chemical Safety & Hazard Investigation Board, then expanded on the lessons learned from investigations carried out under his chairmanship.
The afternoon saw the stories of the Deepwater Horizon and Fukushima disasters brought to life through theatre productions and also a range of technical sessions. All speaker presentations will be added to the website here or http://www.oilandgasuk.co.uk/events/Piper25/Presentations.cfm .
