CHICAGO - Dr. Loriene Roy, professor in the School of Information at the University of Texas at Austin and past-president of the American Library Association (ALA), will deliver the 2013 Jean E. Coleman Library Outreach Lecture, from 8:30 - 10 a.m. Monday, July 1 during ALA’s 2013 Annual Conference in Chicago, in room n427a of McCormick Place.

Her lecture, titled “What's Love Got to Do With It?: The Place of Love and Forgiveness in Library and Information Studies,” will draw upon her experiences from the Fetzer Institute’s Global Gathering: The Pilgrimage on Love in Forgiveness, held in Assisi, Italy in September 2012.  The five-day meeting showcased projects exemplifying the power of love and forgiveness across 16 disciplines, including the information and communications professions. Roy’s presentation will explore what roles love and forgiveness play in library and information studies (LIS).

Roy has decades of experience as an LIS educator and leader in the library profession. She is the outgoing convener of the Special Interest Group (SIG) on Indigenous Matters for the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions and chairs the International Relations Round Table for the American Library Association. She has given more than 500 formal presentations and has published widely. She served as the 2007-2008 president of the American Library Association and the 1997-1998 president of the American Indian Library Association. She is Anishinabe, enrolled on the White Earth Reservation, a member of the Minnesota Chippewa Tribe.

The lecture series honors Dr. Jean E. Coleman, the first director of the ALA Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS), for her leadership in focusing the association's attention on issues affecting traditionally underserved and underrepresented people in libraries.

The Jean Coleman Lecture is open to all Annual Conference attendees. This year’s event is coordinated by the Office for Literacy and Outreach Services Advisory Committee, Fantasia Thorne (chair), Jill Abood, Maria Cahill, Lisa Crisman, Saroj Ghoting, Jerri Heid, Maija Meadows, Nancy Pack, Roberta Craig Reasoner, John Sandstrom and Donna Shannon.

The Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS) serves the Association by identifying and promoting library services that support equitable access to the knowledge and information stored in our libraries. OLOS focuses attention on services that are inclusive of traditionally underserved populations, including new and non-readers, people geographically isolated, people with disabilities, rural and urban poor people, and people generally discriminated against based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, language and social class. The Office ensures that training, information resources and technical assistance are available to help libraries and librarians develop effective strategies to develop programs and service for new users.
