Track:

Barber Motorsports Park - 2.3-mile, 17-turn natural road course

Length:

Rolex Series - 2 hour timed race CTSCCS – 2.5 hour timed race

See For Yourself:

Hear from last year’s Barber DP winners, Spirit of Daytona, along with Colin Braun, Bill Auberlen and Alex Gurney about why Barber is challenging.  And why tire management is a key factor at this track.  Watch now: Barber Motorsports Park Preview.

Tire Sets:

DP, GT and GX teams will all be allowed 6 sets of tires for the race (including slicks and rain tires).  A team that has a Truman/Aiken driver, or “young gun” driver, will be allow one extra set.  There is no set limit for the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series (CTSCCS).

Where Else Does This Compound Race:

DP – this tire compound is used at Austin, Barber, Road Atlanta, Belle Isle, Mid-Ohio, Watkins Glen, Road America, Laguna Seca and Lime Rock. GT – this tire compound is used at Austin, Barber, Road Atlanta, Mid-Ohio, Road America, Laguna Seca, and Lime Rock. CTSCC – this tire compound will be used at all tracks this year.

Pit Window:

The estimated pit window for this race is 25-30 laps for all classes.  It is unlikely you will see any teams double stinting on tires.  These are just approximations and does not account for fuel mileage, weather or caution flag laps.

Track Characteristics:

In the past, Barber has presented a demanding surface that challenged teams and their tires.  Over the winter, the track was ground down horizontally so now, instead of rounded stones in the surface, the stones are flat.  This has created a faster surface and more grip.  While the changes have created a more friendly surface, tire management will still be important as this track doesn’t “take rubber” like other tracks on the circuit.

DID YOU KNOW

  • Prepared rain or shine – Continental will bring a total of 2,000 tires to Barber (1,500 slick and 500 rain tires).  Expect to see rain tires used during Thursday’s practice session but the slicks will be brought out in time for Friday and Saturday.

  • Testing, testing – GS teams, including Multimatic, BGB, Automatic, and RSR, participated in a private test with Continental Tire a couple weeks ago at Barber.  Tire wear was good and lap times were a couple seconds quicker than last year’s race weekend.  Of note: once track temps got above 85 degrees Fahrenheit, lap times slowed down a bit.  But overall, grip was drastically improved.

  • Records could fall – Based on the GS test a couple weeks ago, and the Indy Car test in March (60% of the drivers who participated were faster than the track record), look for records to potentially fall when the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge Series and Rolex Series take to the track for qualifying on Friday.

  • #TheFuture – Continental Tire made its ALMS debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring on the Prototype Challenge (PC) cars with huge success.  Continental Tire was named the exclusive tire supplier for the Prototype Challenge (PC) class in the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón (ALMS) for the 2013 season. Continental Tire also became the presenting sponsor of the PC class with the official name being, “Prototype Challenge presented by Continental Tire”.
