The Climate Registry General Reporting Protocol 2.0 Released
The Climate Registry has released its General Reporting Protocol 2.0 (GRP), an update to the GRP which includes guidelines for Climate Registry members to measure and report indirect emissions associated with renewable energy products. Included in the GRP are accounting updates for reporting renewable energy certificates (RECs) that are purchased bundled with renewable electricity, sold separately, or generated on-site. The GRP 2.0 allows unbundled RECs to be applied to scope 2 emissions if they are Registry-recognized products. Registry-recognized products must be whole/fully-aggregated, not double counted, surplus to regulatory requirements, and meet other eligibility criteria. The Climate Registry accepts RECs from Green-e Energy, EcoLogo, and other programs that meet equivalent standards, upon staff evaluation.
The update also includes new calculation methods and facility aggregation guidance, protocol updates previously issued in the Updates and Clarifications Document, and verification protocol updates.
