Local Pupils and Border Biscuits team up for biscuity challenge
14 March 2013
Today, pupils from local secondary school Lanark Grammar will be showing off their ideas for a new and exciting children's biscuit to a panel of industry experts, including top biscuit maker Border Biscuits. The presentation is part of a challenge the students were set in January to design and create the new biscuit for the company.
Over the last few months, 180 S1 pupils at the school have been working in groups to design the new biscuit. As part of the challenge, pupils were visited by the biscuit baking team at Border Biscuits, who gave them insight into the company and into how new products are developed. Amongst other activities, pupils worked together in groups to conduct market research on what types of biscuits would appeal to their target market. They also learnt how sensory evaluation is used to develop new products and of the importance of food labelling. They were also shown how to cost and evaluate their biscuits.
This project is one of many skills development related initiatives between Border Biscuits and Lanark Grammar and is one of the many partnerships set up by the Scottish Food and Drink Federation (SFDF) as part of its 'A Future in Food' national schools programme. A Future in Food works to build partnerships between Scottish schools and food and drink businesses, helping teachers, pupils and parents better understand where their food comes from, how it's produced, and what careers are available in the sector.
Moira Stalker, SFDF Schools Programme Coordinator, said:
“The partnership between Lanark Grammar and Border Biscuits is a great example of how local businesses and schools can work together to support education. Not only will pupils get to learn more about one of their own local food producers, it will also get them thinking about how food is made and the many exciting careers the Scottish food industry has to offer.”
Caryl Hamilton, finance director at Border Biscuits said:
“We're really looking forward to seeing all of the creative biscuit designs from the pupils at Lanark Grammar. We have been based in Lanark for over 25 years and the majority of our staff comes from within the immediate vicinity of the factory, so we really value our partnership with Lanark Grammar. Building links with the local community is a really important part of our company values and it's great to be able to share our knowledge of the Scottish food industry with future generations.”
Aline Wilson, deputy head teacher at Lanark Grammar School said:
“We have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working in partnership with a local company which has such an established presence within the national market place. Our S1 pupils have benefited greatly from the opportunity to take part in activities which expand their curricular knowledge and understanding in the field the Scottish Food Industry.”
