Climate Change Debate: Offshore Industry Response

The UK offshore oil and gas industry welcomes todays launch of the Governments consultation paper on climate change.

James May, Director-General of UK Offshore Operators Association (UKOOA), said: We are pleased to note the Deputy Prime Ministers determination not to introduce measures that will damage competitiveness or have unacceptable social costs.

The UK oil and gas industry has already taken steps to reduce emissions and improve energy efficiency, and looks forward to playing a constructive and proactive role in this debate.

The oil and gas industry supports 380,000 jobs across the country which depend on the continuing competitiveness of the UK in the global market place for investment.

Achieving the Governments Kyoto targets, without threatening the UKs competitive base, will be a challenge for society as a whole. Solutions must be based on a combination of sound science, technical innovation and flexibility of approach.

The Industry will consider the consultation papers policy options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and will give its full response to Government in due course.
