UKOOA Statement on HSE Safety Statistics
"The 2005/6 safety statistics released today confirm the unpalatable fact that two people lost their lives and 50 suffered serious injury during the year. We remain clear that this is unacceptable and the entire industrys thoughts are with those colleagues involved and their families.
"The industry remains focused on improving its performance and the HSE statistics do confirm that some significant progress is being made.
"Activity and the number of workers offshore increased by almost 22% in the year in question and the fatal and major injury rate decreased by 11%. The over three day injury rate continued the slow decline that it has shown since 2002/3 and the number of dangerous occurrences also fell buy almost 11%.
"At a time of such intense activity it is a credit to the workforce and management that this progress has been made and it deserves to be properly acknowledged.
"Currently, more that 70 companies are involved in leadership visits to installations to discuss safety with all members of the workforce and, specifically, to capture improvement ideas and address safety concerns. Our determination to work together to drive down accidents offshore remains."
