Oil & Gas UK Comment on Industry Safety Record

“There is strong collaboration across the UK offshore industry to improve safety performance continually, year on year.  Our ultimate goal is to make the UK continental shelf the safest place to work in the oil and gas industry worldwide.

“Since the creation of the industry’s Step Change in Safety initiative in 1997, there has been a marked overall improvement in our performance, with falling long term trends for dangerous occurrences, hydrocarbon releases and injuries.   “For example, during this period the total injury rate has been reduced by 62% and the number of major and significant hydrocarbon releases has fallen from 152 in 1997/98 to 85 in 2009/2010.

“The industry invests significantly each year in health and safety and this will continue. It is in the foremost ranks in its efforts to improve its safety performance through leadership, communication and co-operation and Step Change in Safety is a global exemplar in that regard.”
