General Mills joins NFL for Let's Kick Hunger Day

A record one in seven Americans is struggling to put enough food on the table, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. To help combat this, Facebook visitors to the General Mills Foundation's Let's Kick Hunger page can help with just a click of their mouse.

Through Jan. 6, 2011, for each "like" on the General Mills Foundation's Facebook page, General Mills will donate $1 - up to $10,000 total - to Second Harvest Heartland and Feeding America food banks serviced through a Taste of the NFL.

What's more, on January 8 at the Mall of America's main rotunda in Bloomington, Minn., a 13-hour radiothon (877-886-HERO) will benefit Taste of the NFL and Second Harvest Heartland.

Radio station WCCO will welcome guests throughout the day, including, nationally recognized chef Bobby Flay and other guests, including NFL players such as former Minnesota Viking Randall McDaniel. McDaniel was recently inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Presented by Minnesota food companies General Mills, Cargill and Land O' Lakes, the event is also brought to you by WCCO, Cub Food, By the Yard, Vanguard Travel and Mall of America.

Second Harvest Heartland will receive 50 percent of the net proceeds, with the other half donated to Taste of the NFL-associated food banks in the 31 NFL markets.

For 30 years, General Mills has had a partnership with Feeding America, the largest hunger relief organization in the U.S.

During fiscal 2010, General Mills donated more than $18 million in food products to food shelves across the United States through the Feeding America network, which comprises more than 200 food banks that support about 63,000 agencies across the United States.
