For the fifth year in a row, General Mills has been named to Black Enterprise magazine’s “40 Best Companies for Diversity” in America. The annual list, which honors companies for their success in fostering an atmosphere of inclusion for African-Americans, appears in the July issue of Black Enterprise magazine and on its website.
“We’re proud to again be recognized by Black Enterprise for our ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive workplace,” says Ken Charles, vice president of Diversity and Inclusion at General Mills. “For us, inclusion is both a value and a business strategy that helps us attract and retain top talent while driving innovation and consumer engagement around the world.”
General Mills’ commitment to diversity is reflected in its hiring and professional advancement of women and people of color into leadership positions. Three African-Americans report directly to General Mills’ chairman and CEO, and two African-Americans currently sit on the General Mills Board of Directors.
Selection process To select the 2011 “40 Best Companies for Diversity,” the magazine sent surveys to America’s top 1,000 publicly traded companies as well as to the 100 leading global companies with strong U.S. operations.
The questionnaire focused on the participation of African-Americans and members of other ethnic minority groups as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau in four key areas: supplier diversity, senior management, board involvement, and employee base.
The final scores, along with the results of reporting and research conducted by the editorial staff, were used to determine the “40 Best Companies for Diversity.”
Such external awards reinforce the company’s strong reputation and play a positive role in recruitment. So far this year, General Mills has received several honors, including “Best Companies for Multicultural Women” (Working Mother magazine); “100 Best Companies to Work For” (Fortune); and “World’s Most Innovative Companies” (Forbes).
Increasingly, the external recognition also includes awards outside of the United States. General Mills teams in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and France, for example, all recently have been honored
