Send a 'Cheer' to U.S. military families

October 25, 2011

General Mills Corporate Communications

Cheerios is lifting the spirits of U.S. military families and donating to the United Service Organizations (USO) by encouraging everyone to send a simple "thank you" to those in the armed forces using the "Cheer" postcard found on the front of specially marked boxes of Cheerios in stores through November.

For every “Cheer” postcard – clipped from a box of Cheerios – sent in support of a military family, Cheerios will donate $1 to the USO, an organization that is dedicated to lifting the spirits of U.S. military families.

Cheerios has already donated $150,000 to the USO and will donate up to $100,000 more based on the number of postcards received by Nov. 30, 2012.

Nationwide promotion In terms of volume, the promotion is the biggest in Big G history, with more than 10.3 million specially marked Cheerios boxes. It will also feature a 15-second nationwide television commercial set to begin airing today on major networks and many others.

Military families, whether on bases or in their communities, often face separation, relocations and single parenting duties. There are more than 1.4 million active duty military members supported by more than 3.6 million family members, and 70 percent of married active duty military members have children.

With more than 160 locations, the USO – which was formed in 1941 as the United Service Organizations to support troops and military families as the U.S. entered World War II – provides a wide range of services to military families.

Cheer postcards After purchasing a specially marked Cheerios box, consumers can send a Cheer postcard in three easy steps:

  • Cut out the postcard on the front of the box using the dotted lines around the “Cheer” in the Cheerios logo.
  • On the back side of the postcard, add a message of encouragement or a simple “thank you.”
  • Add postage, and drop the pre-addressed post card in the mail.

Once the post cards are received, the USO will distribute them to military families on bases and in USO centers.
