Arizona Junior Golf Tournament Results

Boys 15-19: Jake Elliot;Boise, Idaho
Girls 15-19: Sierra Campbell;Rio Rancho, New Mexico
Girls U14: Emily Mahar, Scottsdale, Arizona
The Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour 2013 season kicked off to a great start. Sixty-one juniors from across the southwest and Canada traveled to Goodyear, Arizona to play in RMJGT’s first tournament of the season at an elite golf club in the West Valley.
Palm Valley Golf Club has two distinct 18-hole courses, a complete practice facility, a dining area, and is known as a must-play for golfers visiting the Phoenix area.
The junior golfers played the Arthur Hills designed Palms Course that covers 7,015 yards from the tips. The par-72 course also features one of the most picturesque closing holes in the region—a par-5 hole with a lake that runs on the left side of the fairway and wraps around the three-tiered green.
In the girls U14 division, 13-year-old Emily Mahar of Scottsdale, AZ, played notably well for her opening tournament. She shot an impressive four under par on the front nine with three consecutive birdies on holes 4, 5 and 6 to take first place. Returning junior golfer, Caroline Jordaan, of Cherry Hills Village, CO, tied for second place with opponent Hailey Schalk, also from Colorado. Both girls finished with a total of 155. Caroline was able to secure the second place spot with her back nine second day score.
John Sands who resides in Hoquiam, WA, shot a consistent two-over par each day at Palm Valley. John had only one double over the course of the tournament on hole 4 the first day. After, he returned with five birdies and the rest pars. Cameron Ruiz from Gilbert AZ gets 2nd in his first RMJGT event. He shot an 80, 81 to tie for second place with Austin Hardman from Highlands Ranch CO who shot a 76, 85 but was able to win the scorecard playoff.. There was a large turnout for the girls 15-19 year old division. Fifteen girls teed it up from the white tees, playing just over 5,800 yards. This yardage allowed for the girls to hit more greens in regulation, and therefore, rewarded lower scores. First place finisher, Sierra Campbell, won the division by five strokes, shooting a 78, 77 for a total of 155. This is the first win for Sierra since she joined the tour in 2010. Finishing five strokes behind for second place was 13-year-old Haylin Harris of Tucson, AZ. Haylin had the best par-4 performance in her division with an average of 4.35. Samantha Crawford who resides in South Jordan UT shot nine strokes better the second day, moving from a mid-place finish to third place.
The boys 15-19 year old division was a close competition including a three-person, second-place tiebreaker. David Elliot from Boise, ID was the only player to shoot even par for the tournament, shooting one under the first day and a countering one over par the second day. David had a total of 7 birdies, 22 pars and 7 bogeys over the weekend. Fellow Arizona competitors Colton Estevez, Austin Glendinning and Connor Nam all finished in second place shooting a total of 148, four shots behind first place. Colton held three of the best finishes across the stat board. He led with the most pars or better, most pars and the best par-5 performance to secure the second spot while Connor Nam was able to finish third..
The OPEN at Palm Valley was a perfect jump start to the rest of the season. The next three tournaments will also be hosted in Arizona. The RMJGT staff looks forward to seeing a large turnout for the Major at Arrowhead Classic on March 9-10.
