WASHINGTON - U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood today announced a $2.2 million Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) grant for the installation and modification of airfield guidance signs at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport.

"This funding will help improve safety on this critical airfield," Secretary LaHood said. "With this investment, O'Hare will be able to improve infrastructure, keep aircraft moving and provide jobs to area workers."

The FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant will fund the modification of 900 airfield guidance signs and lighting control system displays. The project begins this fall and will continue for approximately 18 months.

"O'Hare is an important airport in our system. This grant will boost the operational safety and efficiency of the airport," said Acting FAA Administrator Michael Huerta.

AIP provides $3.35 billion in annual funding for projects that are vital to maintaining the safety, capacity and environmental stewardship of our nation's airports. More than 3,300 airports nationally are eligible for AIP grants benefiting commercial passengers, cargo operations and general aviation activities.
