Cleveland – A recall on black licorice has been expanded due to lead contamination. As reported by the Contra Costa Times, potentially dangerous levels of lead were found in additional Red Vines products manufactured in a Union City production center following the recall on black licorice products announced by the California Department of Public Health last month.

Red Vines Black Licorice Twists, Family Mix, and Mixed Bites and Snaps, and other products included in the recall with the expiration date of Feb. 4, 2013, or with “Best Before 020413” on the labeling should be discarded immediately.

The source of the contamination is reportedly still being investigated. Union City's American Licorice Co., manufacturer and distributor of the candies, is stated to be working with the state department to get the contaminated products off the market.
