Moscow – Three members of a Russian feminist punk rock band have been sentenced to two years in prison after being convicted of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, Maria Alekhina, 24, and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 30, who are members of the band Pussy Riot, were sentenced Friday on the charge linked to a protest against Vladimir Putin earlier this year in which they entered a cathedral and sang a “punk prayer.”

Several celebrities have spoken out about the women’s arrest and condemned prosecuting them in the case.

Russian author Boris Akunin is quoted by the AP as stating of the case, “The whole thing is bad because it's yet another step toward the escalation of tensions within society. And the government is absolutely to blame.”
