Origin responds to speculation on energy prices
Origin Energy, the leading Australian energy retailer, today urged customers concerned about rising energy prices to get in touch with Origin to make sure they are on the best deal available.
The cost of delivering energy to customers is increasing across the country and Origin understands this is a cause of concern to many Australians.
Responding specifically to media reports of rising electricity bills in Queensland, Origin said by far the two major drivers of increasing energy prices in that state were network costs and Federal and State environmental schemes including the Federal Government's carbon pricing mechanism.
Origin Executive General Manager Corporate Affairs, Mr Phil Craig, said "Network costs now represent up to half of a typical customer's bill, and they are increasing.
"It has also been well documented that the introduction of the carbon price is impacting on energy bills.
"Origin structures prices to reflect the actual costs of supplying energy to customers, including the networks, the introduction of the carbon price and the wholesale cost of energy," Mr Craig said.
Contrary to statements made in the media today, Origin will carry a bill message in Queensland that estimates the impact of the price on carbon and/or green energy schemes on householders' bills. The message will be provided by the regulator and will appear on customers' first bill post 1 July.
"All energy retailers are facing these cost pressures and we are already seeing some companies announce similar price increases. Origin has moved first to announce price increases, in an effort to be transparent and provide certainty for our customers. To ensure they are on the best deal available, Origin customers should call us on 13 24 61," Mr Craig said.
As a proudly Australian company, Origin seeks to help customers to manage their energy costs through energy efficiency advice and hardship schemes. Customers can visit www.originenergy.com.au/saveenergy or call us on 13 24 61 for more information.
