Bring jobs home
Mich. Sen. Debbie Stabenow and UAW members look to put America back to work
DEARBORN, Mich. – Over the last several years, UAW members felt hopeful as newly negotiated contract language between workers and managers brought jobs back to the United States from Europe, Asia, Central and South America – something workers would like to see become a trend in American manufacturing.
On June 29, the UAW members will gather at UAW Local 600 in Dearborn as part of a nationwide mobilization called “America Wants to Work.” With 128 jobs being added to Ford’s Dearborn Engine plant in conjunction with the production of the new 2.0 liter four-cylinder GDI engine, it serves as a model for the kind of economic resurgence our state and our country need.
This event focuses on the Bring Jobs Home Act, a legislative package introduced by Michigan Sen. Debbie Stabenow that would eliminate tax breaks allowing companies to deduct expenses associated with moving operations overseas, while still encouraging them to assist displaced workers. It would also provide a tax credit to corporations that bring jobs back to the United States.
Stabenow will be on hand to discuss the proposed legislation.
The bill is expected to be voted on in early July when Congress convenes after the Independence Day recess.
“For the first time in a long time, we are producing engines at full capacity here in Dearborn,” said UAW Local 600 President Bernie Ricke. “We’ve set an example for what can happen when everybody works together to create good American jobs.”
