Washington, D.C. – A former council chairman in Washington D.C. has pleaded guilty to charges of bank fraud. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), Kwame Brown admitted to forgery on submitted documents and other fraudulent acts in federal court.

Brown reportedly resigned from his position on the council days prior. Another councilmember resigned months before Brown after admitting to stealing funds designated for a special program.

Councilmember Mary Cheh, who is acting chair for the panel, is quoted by the AP as stating of the resignation amid the corruption allegations, “Whether it's resignations, investigations, whatever it is — I think it's had a very bad effect… People are feeling demoralized, I think they're feeling disappointed.”

A meeting is reportedly set for next week, in which a new interim chair will be selected.
