Commissioner Miller Statement on President Trump’s Soybean Trade Deal with China
The following statement may be attributed to Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller:
“This deal is a massive win for America’s farmers and ranchers. China has agreed to purchase 25 million metric tons of U.S. soybeans annually, which means Texas soybean growers and producers across the country can rest easier knowing their product will find a strong and stable market. I would like to thank President Trump for supporting American farmers in these negotiations and ensuring a more prosperous future for agriculture by striking these deals and standing firm.
China is by far the largest soybean importer in the world, projected to buy around 90 million tons and account for more than 80% of the growth in global soybean imports. Before the trade dispute, the United States shipped about 28 percent of its total soybean production to China. Last year, that number dropped to just 22 percent, and then they stopped buying altogether. This agreement closes that gap and helps put American soybeans back on ships bound for China and into the global marketplace.
When things were tough, America didn’t back down. President Trump didn’t roll over. With the threat of substantial tariffs on the table, President Trump’s bold stance gave the United States real leverage at the negotiating table. As a result, China backed off its rare-earth export controls and has ceased its retaliatory trade practices harming American farmers. This deal is great news for America’s farms and rural families. Our producers depend on fair markets and strong leadership, and this deal delivers both. This is precisely what happens when America stands its ground, defends its producers, and fights for a level playing field.”
