Skipping abrasion or using too fine of a grit abrasive between finish coats can also cause this to occur. Stain that is not sufficiently wiped up can create this problem or improper tacking between coats will cause the problem as well. “Applying finish products that are not compatible can contribute to causing this,” says Allman. Another situation that can also cause peeling to occur is surface contamination such as wax or oil-soap cleaners. The cure for this problem is to sand and re-coat the problem areas of the floor. Be sure to abrade well, using the recommended grit size between coats.

Orange Peel
This is where the surface of the finished floor has a surface that resembles that of an orange peel. The cause of this is a finish coat that dries too quickly. Another cause is a finish or sub-strate that is too cold, causing poor flow and leveling. Using an improper applicator will also cause this, where small bubbles will form in the finish. “A floor should never be covered before the finish has fully cured,” says Allman. The cure for this problem is to Abrade/Screen and re-coat the floor. Select the recommended applicator for the product being applied. Make sure that the floor and the product being applied have adjusted to proper temperature; consult with the finish manufacturer. A wood floor may take a few days to warm up in very cold climates, so it’s good to allow for this.
