Delamination
This is the separation of a layer from an adjoining one within piece of engineered wood flooring. The causes include flooding and other excessive moisture or humidity that fluctuates between extremes. This can also include manufacturing errors when there is minimal or no wood tissue attached to adjoining layers due to lack of glue. The cure for this problem is simply to replace the affected boards. In most cases, the delamination will affect only a small number of engineered boards rather than the entire floor.


Dents
This is simply a crushed spot in the wood. Dents can be caused by high heel shoes, heavy objects that have been dropped, metal legs on furniture and even shipping damage from when the new floor was initially installed. The cure for these dents is to simply remove and replace the existing boards. In some cases, the entire wood floor may need to be re-sanded and coated depending on the severity of the issue. “Once we evaluate the problems, we can usually save the home owner money by simply replacing the damaged boards,” says Allman.

Dish Out
This is areas on the wood floor where softer parts of the wood appear to have been sanded or hollowed out more than other areas. It is more evident in wood species that exhibit pronounced spring (soft) and summer (hard) grain patterns or between mixed species of varying hardness together on a floor, such as in feature strips, boarders and medallions. The cause of this is using the wrong angles when sanding with a big machine. This can also be caused by using too flexible of a pad on the buffer during the screening process.

The cure is to re-sand the floor using a slight angle with the big machine and to not cross boarders at a right angle. A hard plate or multi-disk sander may be needed.
