Long Island Storytelling Show Builds On Studies That Show The Social Impact of Well-Told True Stories

Creator and host Jude Treder-Wolf

Studies show: the more absorbing a true story is, the harder it is to detect "false notes." A Long Island storytelling show features true stories-with a twist.

"To the extent that individuals are absorbed into a story or transported into a narrative world, they may show effects of the story on their real-world beliefs."

SMITHTOWN, NY, UNITED STATES, April 17, 2015 /EINPresswire.com/ -- (Mostly)TRUE THINGS is a live storytelling show that features four storytellers, each sharing a well-crafted, engaging personal, true story, but 3 of them weave some false details into the telling. What is altered for the purpose of the show does not change the narrative truth of the story, and audience members usually have to listen closely to perceive them. The level of craft and talent the storytellers bring to the stage make those details harder to discern, according to a study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology in 2000. The researchers found that highly absorbing, emotionally-riveting stories can reduce a listener's ability to question or suspend disbelief."To the extent that individuals are absorbed into a story or transported into a narrative world," writer researchers Melanie C Green and Timothy C Brock of Ohio State University, "they may show effects of the story on their real-world beliefs." This makes storytelling a powerfully persuasive tool with the potential to impact thinking and attitudes. A different study, published in the February 2001 Teaching and Teacher Education found that "personal stories are powerful means of becoming aware of the taken-for-granted arrangements of one's culture, of piercing walls of hostility and of coming to understand other cultures."

The Sunday April 26, 2015 performance of (mostly) TRUE THINGS will take place at 4 pm at Performing Arts Studio, 224 E. Main St., Port Jefferson, NY. Tickets are $10, available at the door or online at Eventbrite. This performance will feature 4 remarkable storytellers from diverse worlds:

She was part of the Newsday team that won the Pulitzer Award for coverage of the TWA Flight 800 crash in 1996.

Stevie GB is a regular in the Long Island Comedy Festival and award-winning comedian. He has performed at The Borgata, Catch A Rising Star, The Paramount, and countless other venues. He's performed with comedy legends like Louie Anderson, Kevin Meaney, Rob Schneider, Kevin Pollak, and Bobby Collins. He will perform a live taping of his solo show "So this is my life now" at Performing Arts Studio on May 30.

Charlie Pellegrino is an Outsider artist, poet, and actor who also works as a untion Steamfitter in Local 638.

After all the stories are told the audience can question the storytellers to try and determine which one has told the unvarnished truth, then votes for their choice. There are prizes for those who vote for the correct person, then all the storytellers share the details they changed for the show. The show is hosted by Jude Treder-Wolff, a writer/performer and singer/songwriter who writes original songs to introduce the different aspects of the game within the show. It is produced by Lifestage, Inc, a Smithtown, NY training and consulting company that providers arts-based seminars, classes and workshops and partners with arts organizations to create events that build and have a positive impact on the community.
