Bingle Report Finds Individuals From Victoria Are The Most Heavily Fined and Tolled Motorists

/EINPresswire.com/ On average Victorian drivers pay twice as much as NSW drivers in traffic fines, according to the Bingle Cost of Motoring Index launched today.

Bingle spokesperson Melanie Vine said not only did Victorians pay the most fines on the east-coast; they also paid 31 percent more in parking and tolls.

"Our index found Victoria clocked up a massive $343m in traffic fines last year compared to NSW's $213m," said Ms Vine.

"The average Victorian motorist paid more than double the amount in fines compared to NSW drivers, about $100 per motorist compared to $48."

"Despite this, Victorian's cost of motoring is significantly cheaper than Queensland on an individual level, and virtually equal with NSW."

"This is because Victorians pay less overall for petrol than Queenslanders, and their maintenance, insurance and registration costs are cheaper compared to NSW."

The Bingle Cost of Motoring Index has been developed to measure and track the ongoing annual cost of motoring across NSW, Victoria and Queensland. Across the Victorian economy the estimated cost of motoring added up to more than $18 billion last year.

In another area tracked by the index, parking and tolls, Victoria also paid well above Queensland and NSW. "Victoria's toll network is one of the widest in Australia and you can see this having an effect in the motorists' back pocket," said Ms Vine.

Victorians pay an estimated $754m in parking and tolls, while NSW pays $745m, or $52 more per Victorian motorist. The average individual cost of keeping a single car on the road in Victoria is $5,293 a year. This means a family with two cars will face at least a $10,000 bill as all costs relate directly to the car.

"Staying on the road is a necessity for most Australian families, but the increasing cost of living is making this more difficult," Ms Vine said.

"Understanding just what makes up the cost of motoring can help keep costs down for motorists. "By driving in a more measured way to conserve petrol, looking for better-value insurance and obeying the road rules to avoid fines, consumers can make real savings."

Bingles Cost of Motoring Index - 2012

The index tracks the cost of motoring both as an average for individuals and at an economic level across the states.

Index development note

The Bingle Cost of Motoring Index tracks and measures the ongoing costs faced by drivers annually. It includes a survey of 1,200 owner drivers, conducted in September 2011, covering VIC, NSW and QLD. This data, along with other costs sourced from the Government, underpins this index, which was created by research agency Nature. The sub groups have been cross referenced against the latest census data for drivers with state, region, age and gender figures to represent the results at a population level.
