Balqon BLQN.OB A Maverick In Green Energy

/EINPresswire.com/ As oil prices surge, the employment rate remains at a stand-still, and the U.S. economy slowly climbs out of the deep hole it fell into during the 2008 recession, there is an industry upon which investors can rely as a veritable wellspring of financial growth, job creation, renewable resources and above all, progress. It is the richly productive and growing arena of clean and alternative energy industries.

One company that has repeatedly asserted itself as a maverick in this business is Balqon Corporation (BLQN). With its headquarters located in Harbor City, California, Balqon is one of the leading developers of all-electric drive systems, lithium battery systems, and heavy-duty electric trucks. Balqon products are marketed globally to automotive manufacturers, governments, or any other companies looking to reduce emissions, cut production costs, and effectively "go green." Currently trading at $0.40 with a market cap of $13.9M, Balqon's interest in designing, developing, and distributing advanced cargo container vehicles for transportation applications is complemented by its initiatives in building public transportation vehicles and cutting-edge battery energy storage systems. These ambitious, multi-faceted ventures have positioned Balqon so that it has the potential to become one of the worldwide manufacturing leaders in clean energy technologies.

Three years ago, as a result of a local Clean Air Action Plan, the Air Quality Management District and Port of Los Angeles purchased from the company twenty-five all electric, zero tailpipe emission heavy duty trucks. These electric trucks are capable of hauling 30-ton shipping containers at 40 miles per hour for a distance of up to 60 miles. As recently as May 16 2012, Balqon received a $630,000 contract from the Port of Los Angeles ("POLA") to retrofit electric-powered yard tractors with new generation of lithium batteries to double range of its vehicles. The cost of powering these high-tech electric trucks is about 20 cents per mile, 74% lower operating cost of the average diesel-fueled vehicle. The Port of LA has many near-dock and warehouse facilities in close proximity, using over 12,000 short-haul tractors daily to transport containers. This makes Balqon electric trucks an ideal choice for the largest port complex in the Western hemisphere.

Given that many Americans consider the city of Los Angeles to be synonymous with air pollution, Balqon's partnership with the City of LA is no small accomplishment. This highly innovative company's electric trucks reduce operating costs, pollution, and noise. Its work in LA has led to the opening of a manufacturing plant in harbor city and the creation of new green jobs at a time when new manufacturing jobs are tough to find.

But Balqon has not stopped there. In May 2012, the company introduced its signature Class 8 electric tractor, Model MX30, for short-haul drayage and inner-city applications. The MX30 is one of the most revolutionary electric vehicles in the market. It can travel at speeds up to 70MPH and carry shipping loads over 30 tons. Incorporating Balqon's proprietary battery management, charging, and drive systems, the MX30 features standard 600 Volt lithium batteries, can be charged in only three hours, and will travel up to 150 miles under unloaded conditions on a single charge.

According to 20 year electric vehicle veteran Balwinder Samra, the CEO and founder of Balqon, "the MX30, a heavy-duty electric tractor, is ideal for short-haul container drayage applications at locations such as ports, airports, and urban centers where both smog and congestion contribute to health risks to local communities." He adds, "we believe that the MX30 is an ideal solution for use at ports where air pollution is severe and distances traveled between marine terminals and local rail yards are less than five miles per trip."

In addition to vehicles used for shipping, Balqon has recently expanded its interests by designing and unveiling its very own all-electric 14-passenger shuttle bus, the EQO14. Built on an E-450 chassis, the EQO14 is designed to transport 14 passengers in defined route shuttle operations used at locations such as airports, universities, hotels, and military bases. It has a range of 80 miles, can be charged in less than an hour, and boasts a noise level under 69db. It also incorporates the latest idle shut-off technologies that increase energy conservation during vehicle idling. All of these innovations help make the EQO14 one of the most advanced battery-operated public transportation vehicles in the world.

As if all of these ventures were not impressive enough, Balqon Corporation has also made remarkable strides in the area of lithium battery storage, as witnessed by recent key events in the company's history. In an unprecedented display of clean battery power, on May 5th of this year, Balqon installed a one Megawatt Hour "mWh" lithium battery storage system at the University of California, Riverside (UCR) to power the Bourns College of Engineering. This complex system employs some of Balqon's most prized proprietary electronic components, including their proprietary160 kilo Watt ("kW") battery charger and their 240 kW flux vector inverter. After the installation of this system, company CEO Mr. Samra noted, that Balqon was "using the proprietary charger and inverter technologies developed during the UCR project to address other lithium battery storage opportunities related to cell towers and solar and wind energy systems."

The Balqon-UCR partnership was so successful that Balqon and UCR announced that they would be initiating an even bigger undertaking: making the UCR campus's transportation system the first 100% renewable energy powered transportation system in the country. This exciting and forward-thinking 2 million dollar project is funded by South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) and involves a number of companies and government entities, including Bourns Inc., Solar Max, Winston Global Energy, the City of Riverside, Riverside Public Utilities, Riverside Transit Agency, and the UCR Physical Plant. The plan is to capture solar energy, use it to charge Balqon's lithium batteries, and use those batteries to run the campus's trolley bus and other electric vehicles. This endeavor will create a campus transportation system that will surely set a new standard in the use of clean, renewable, sustainable energy.

With its adherence to a business model that utilizes all of the smartest, most efficient green technologies available in the areas of electric-powered vehicles and advanced battery storage, Balqon is poised for long-term financial growth, stability, and expansion. Throughout its relatively brief history, Balqon has asserted itself through technological ingenuity and strategic partnerships to become one of the country's leaders in the vastly untapped, yet fertile market of alternative energy storage and transportation.

The markets valuation of OTC market BLQN.OB is a function of not only performance but perception, BLQN proves to be one of many small cap companies that Wall Street has not woken up to or perceived the hidden value that is not readily apparent.

Tomorrowsbluechips believes BLQN.OB represents a great investment opportunity for many looking to expand their green investments. As a result, this is a company that investors may want to take a look at sooner rather than later.
