More than 150 students, teachers, and energy professionals from Maine engaged in wind power activities at the 2012 Energy for ME Energy Fair, hosted by the Island Institute on May 4. Funded by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. EPA, Energy for ME enables middle and high school students to analyze energy generation and usage data to prepare for energy-related careers and to compete to become the most efficient community on the coast. At the Energy Fair, students participated in hands-on workshops that included constructing and testing floating wind turbine platforms, participating in KidWind Project activities, and analyzing data to understand how to site wind turbines. Students presented on their energy projects, including developing a 100-kW wind project on a high school campus, participating in the Maine Wind Blade Challenge, and comparing the U.S. and German offshore wind industries. Representatives from First Wind met with students to discuss the company's projects in Maine and ways to prepare for a wind energy career.
