Today, as people age, brain health will become prevalent in ways our parents did not have to face. The brain health problems that face the aging population include dementias, chronic disease, work life, financial issues, and elder care - not to mention longevity.

According to a study conducted by Dr. Nicole Schupf, Associate Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at Columbia University - "elderly people with a decline in their ability to think were almost twice as likely to die at a younger age".

Alzheimer's disease may affect as many as 16 million Americans by 2050, according to the Alzheimer's Association. Alzheimer's rarely occurs before the age of 65 and some studies indicate that 50 percent of all individuals over age 80 will develop Alzheimer's disease. Other types of dementia can occur as we age; approximately five percent of people over age 65 have some form of dementia. Parkinson's disease affects one percent of people over age 60.

Vascular dementia, which results from diseases or medical conditions such as heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, or congestive heart failure, accounts for up to 20 percent of all dementias.

A poorly functioning brain will affect every aspect of an aging persons life, including overall health. The brain affects all human behavior. Strategies such as eating properly, exercising, and participating in activities that promote mental acuity are generated by a healthy brain. Chronic diseases that occur in older people affect brain function. Diabetes affects blood sugar levels; the brain functions better when blood sugar is tightly regulated.

Diabetes is a disease that requires a high level of self-management, directed by a brain that is cognitively sound.

Economic problems, pension cuts, and possible decreases in Social Security payments mean that a segment of the population like baby boomers will have to work longer and retain mental alertness to keep their jobs. Even without financial concerns, many boomers want to work longer because they enjoy the work, or to start second careers.

Elders who are demented or cognitively impaired require care and may require 24-hour supervision. A disproportionate part of this burden falls on family members, as care facilities are limited and often have waiting lists. Such facilities are also expensive, and shortages of medical professionals are also increasing, leaving aging spouses with much of the burden of care.

As longevity increases, quality of life becomes a major consideration. If health is wealth, the brain health may determine the overall health.
