Miami-Dade County brings Safety in the Sand awareness

Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces (PROS) announces its launch of the Safety in the Sand campaign, a countywide initiative aimed at promoting beach sand safety and reducing the risk of sand-related accidents at Miami-Dade County beaches. This campaign is designed to raise awareness of the risks associated with sand digging and other beach activities, creating a safer environment for all beachgoers.
Creating a Safer Beach Environment:
The Safety in the Sand campaign aims to create a safer beach environment throughout all of Miami-Dade County through education, community involvement and effective communication. By leveraging various marketing channels and engaging the public, including our partners, this campaign can significantly reduce beach-related accidents, promote a culture of safety and responsibility among beachgoers, making our beaches safer for everyone.
The Safety in the Sand campaign focuses on three primary goals:
- Public Education: Providing essential safety tips for beachgoers on how to safely enjoy the sand, including guidelines for digging and for other beach activities
- Signage Installation: Collaborating with the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to design informative signage, that are to be placed by the Parks’ Department at county-operated beaches. These signs will outline key safety measures and serve as a visual reminder to beachgoers
- Partnership Outreach: Encouraging beachfront concessionaires, hotels and municipalities across the County to adopt similar safety signage, ensuring a unified approach to sand safety
Recent Developments:
- A social media campaign has been launched, featuring educational videos in collaboration with the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue
- Permanent signage has been installed at Haulover and Crandon Park beaches on lifeguard towers, outlining essential sand safety protocols
- Parks’ Communication division has distributed informational rack cards to beach concessionaires and hotels, as well as local municipal partners, reinforcing the message of sand safety
Looking Ahead:
The campaign will continue to expand, with PROS partnering with local organizations and local municipalities to promote safety messaging countywide. Additional educational content will be featured on the Miami-Dade County website and in newsletters for county employees.
